“You did not just help me. You helped my kids.”
In their own words.
Members were asked for a few sentences about what the group has meant. This is what came back, unedited apart from punctuation. Nobody is named unless they chose to be.
“I was in a very dark place when I found A Place Called Here after the suicide of my son. The group has saved my life and allowed me to see a future without my boy being physically here, because he is still with me every day in my thoughts and in my heart.”
“Grief brought us together, but somewhere between the tears and the laughter it was kindness that made us family.”
“I lost my son to suicide and found grief so hard to deal with. Nobody outside my family wanted to mention my son. I heard about A Place Called Here through STV news. I went to my first meeting, I didn't know anyone, but immediately I was made to feel very welcome. By the end of the meeting I knew I had found what I had been looking for. Everyone knew what I was feeling. I found empathy, not sympathy. I found a community that supports one another, shares with one another and cares for one another. It is now a very important part of my life.”
“A Place Called Here has become so much more than just a group on a Wednesday. It came into my life at a time when I felt completely lost and gave me somewhere I can show up exactly as I am, without having to pretend I'm okay. After losing my dad, grief changed me and the way I see the world. The group gave me people who understood without everything needing to be explained and made me feel less alone. Through it I've made friendships I genuinely treasure, with people who have stood beside me through some of my hardest days. I honestly don't know where I would be without A Place Called Here. It's given me support, understanding, a safe place to fall apart when I need to, and people who remind me I don't have to carry everything on my own. It's more than a peer support group to me. It's family.”
“Coming to A Place Called Here in January is the best decision I ever made. I finally found people who sadly understand how I'm feeling. There is so much love and support in and outwith the group. We're all bonded by the devastation losing a loved one to suicide brings. It's taught me to speak more freely on how my mum passed away, and how suicide is nothing to be ashamed of. I'll be forever grateful for the love and support I've received and will forever support this amazing group.”
“I lost my dad 32 years ago to suicide and there just wasn't any help or understanding for my grief. I walked into A Place Called Here on its very first meeting and immediately felt at home, with people who understood me. No judgement, no stigma, just love. I've now gone on to volunteer with this amazing charity. The bond and community that has been created through Natalie and Anton's loss, who turned their pain into purpose and who constantly think of us and the group, I don't know where I would be on my grief journey if I never had this group.”
“A Place Called Here has been life changing for me and has had a really positive impact on my whole family. I have attended the group since day one and, despite it being eight years since I lost my wee sister, I was unable to talk about suicide or the reality of our loss with anyone, as they didn't understand. I muddled through life taking care of everyone around me. Thanks to the group I have now been able to work through my own grief and have found healing in sharing openly with people, listening to others and supporting them on their own journey. The wellbeing services offered have also been really positive for me.”
“A Place Called Here has been an absolute lifeline for me navigating loss by suicide. A beautiful, loving and tight knit community supporting each other through the tears and laughter. Special thanks to Anton and Natalie for setting up this support service, and for all the wellbeing days that are so therapeutic, alongside everything they do behind the scenes.”
“The people at A Place Called Here went from being strangers in a new, unfamiliar and scary world, to people I now call family and can't imagine life without. Finding people who understand the heartbreak and complexity of suicide loss has been important, and maybe even a lifeline, for me and many others.”
“Joined as a stranger who was struggling with my own grief. Left with a family who all support and understand each other. The support is like no other.”
“Can't speak highly enough about how A Place Called Here has helped me and my family to deal with the loss of my daughter to suicide. Being amongst like minded people is a very important thing for me personally, because they understand the feelings and emotions that I go through dealing with such a loss. It has enhanced my emotional and mental wellbeing. Can't thank Anton and Natalie enough for having the courage to organise this through their tragic loss.”
“After losing my son two years ago I was desperately trying to get support, and feeling suicidal myself, when I was recommended the group. It has been a lifeline and a family of support where I can share anything and feel understood and held in love.”
“A Place Called Here has given me connections to people who understand my loss, a safe space to share my feelings with no judgement, and hope through shared experiences. The group has helped me not to feel alone anymore.”
Only if it helps you.
Some people find that saying it out loud, to somebody who will not flinch, is part of what helps. Others never want to and that is completely fine. There is no expectation here either way.
