What actually happens.

The hardest part is finding the courage and bravery to come to your first meeting. Here is the whole thing, so there are no surprises.

  1. 01

    You arrive

Come to the church hall any time from 7.15pm. Somebody will be at the door and will say hello. You do not have to tell them anything except your first name, and you do not have to give that either.

  2. 02

    You sit down

There are refreshments and snacks. People are usually talking. It sounds more normal than you are expecting, and that catches most people off guard on the first night.

  3. 03

    We start

Our facilitators will give an introduction. Then we go round the room. If you want to say who you lost, you can. If you want to pass, say pass. There is no pressure or expectation to speak. Do what you are comfortable with.

  4. 04

Every week varies, just like grief

We share our struggles and celebrate our wins together. We honour our loved ones and keep their memory alive. We laugh and we cry together.

  5. 05

    You leave when you want

If you need to step out, step out. Somebody will check you are alright without making a scene about it. We finish at 9pm and people usually stand around talking after.

If you have lost someone to suicide, that is the only requirement.

  • Parents, partners, siblings, grandparents, friends and colleagues.
  • Irrespective of the time of your loss, you are welcome here.
  • People who have never spoken about it out loud.
  • Men and women in roughly equal number, from eighteen upwards.
  • People who have tried other support and found it did not fit.

You do not need to have the right words. You do not need to be strong. You do not need to carry this alone.

A man and a woman smiling with their arms around each other beside a balloon arch and an A Place Called Here Christmas sign.

We do not just want you sitting in a circle talking about the worst thing that ever happened to you.

Alongside the group we run free wellbeing events, roughly every month to six weeks. They are open to anyone who comes to the group, and they are all free.

A woman in boxing gloves, seen from behind, hitting focus pads in a small gym with morning light through frosted windows.

Pads, gloves and a coach who does not mind if you hit hard. The one people are most surprised they enjoy.

You do not have to wait for a Wednesday.

A Place Called Here is a peer support group. We are not a clinical or emergency service, and we are not trained counsellors. If you are in crisis, or you are worried that you might harm yourself, please use one of these. They are free, and someone is there.
